Erik Geurtjens began his career with the company in 1986, and after a brief hiatus he returned in 1994. He has been part of the management team since 1995. We spoke with Erik about his challenges, the future of SOCOTEC Netherlands and his advice for young professionals.
Major challenges within his role as a board member
Because Erik is originally a geotechnical consultant, he finds that he sometimes gets pulled back into day-to-day production. This is a challenge for him in his role as director.“I have to be careful not to keep getting pulled back into production,” he says. He stresses the importance of focusing on his leadership responsibilities and guiding the company toward further growth and development.
Developments that give energy
The vast amount of knowledge within SOCOTEC excites Erik. “There is so much expertise out there, and it is a challenge to bring it to the Netherlands as well,” he says. Erik sees plenty of opportunities in cooperating with other SOCOTEC units, such as SOCOTEC Risk Management & Claims. “Working together with international branches is incredibly fun and offers opportunities to share knowledge and experience.”
The future of SOCOTEC Netherlands
Regarding the future of SOCOTEC Netherlands, Erik is extremely positive. “We are really just starting up,” he explains. SOCOTEC Netherlands is professionalizing in various areas such as HR, marketing and finance. In addition, contact with foreign branches is growing, strengthening cooperation at an international level. Erik characterizes SOCOTEC as a growing company, which offers many opportunities for all employees.
Advice for young employees
For new or young employees, Erik has valuable advice: “SOCOTEC Geotechnics is a dynamic company where young people can quickly take on a lot of responsibility.” He encourages new employees and young potentials to adopt a proactive attitude. “Don't take a wait-and-see attitude. If you want things to change, take the helm yourself. It gives enormous satisfaction when you achieve your goals.”
What makes working at SOCOTEC so much fun?
Erik doesn't have to think long about what makes working at SOCOTEC so enjoyable. “Nice work, great colleagues, more than enough challenges, an informal atmosphere and short lines of communication. In consultation, a lot is possible.” He adds, laughing, “In short, I define SOCOTEC as the nicest company in the Netherlands. Otherwise I wouldn't have worked here for more than 30 years".
A phase of transition
Finally, Erik emphasizes that SOCOTEC Geotechnics is currently in a phase of transition, not because of the acquisition by SOCOTEC, but mainly because of the rapid growth the company has experienced. “We are going through a professionalization process, and that simply takes time,” he explains. Despite the challenges, he is positive: “We are working hard and it is paying off. It will take another year or two to get through this transition phase, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
With a positive outlook on the future and strong confidence in the team, Erik is ready to continue growing SOCOTEC Netherlands together with his colleagues.
